Michael Kennedy

Michael Kennedy

December 10, 1943 - March 13, 2026

Mike Kennedy was a highly accomplished economist, public servant, and teacher.  He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and Queen’s University, where his PhD advisors were Martin Prachowny and Doug Purvis.  He then flourished in three successive careers, first in Ottawa at the Bank of Canada and the Department of Finance, second at the OECD in Paris as Head of the Monetary and Fiscal Policy Division, and third at Queen’s teaching macroeconomics. He taught ECON 222 and 320 (Macroeconomic Theory I and II) but his true forte was ECON 491 (Seminar in Macroeconomics).  He excelled at helping students identify important questions and guiding them through research projects.  He was devoted to providing individual coaching on a scale rare in an era of large classes.   His students and colleagues at Queen’s will remember his insight, kindness, and remarkable sense of humour.
