Economics-Specific Awards
Thee following awards are allocated by the Department of Economics based on merit.
I. Arthur Schneiderman (Arts 1937) Scholarship
Established in January 2008 from the estate of I. Arthur Schneiderman, Arts 1937, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering third year in the Faculty of Arts and Science, with preference to a student in an honours program in Economics.
The Edith Whyte Memorial Book Prizes in Intermediate Macro Theory
Founded by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Edith M. Whyte, B.A. 1948, who at the time of her death in 1980 was the highest ranking woman at the Bank of Canada. Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Economics to students displaying outstanding performance in ECON 222.
The Edith Whyte Memorial Scholarship in Economics
Founded by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Edith M. Whyte, B.A. 1948, who at the time of her death in 1980 was the highest ranking woman at the Bank of Canada. Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Economics in the Fall on the basis of work in the second and third years in Economics to the top student who is admitted to the fourth year of a B.A.(Hons.) program with a major concentration in Economics or Applied Economics. To be eligible, a student must have completed at least 30 units in economics counting toward the major concentration during his or her first three years.
Gowan Foundation No. 1 Prize
Founded by the late Sir James Gowan, K.C.M.G.. Awarded at the discretion of the Department for the best essay written in a 300-level economics course.
Palmer Hoar Memorial Book Prize
Established by the family of the late Palmer Hoar, B.A., M.A., an outstanding graduate in Economics of Queen's University. Awarded annually to the students displaying outstanding performance in ECON 212.
Professor F. A. Knox Prize
Established by the associates and students of Professor F.A. Knox a master of the art of teaching, who taught in the Department of Economics of Queen's University from 1924 to 1965. Awarded to the student with the highest standing in either ECON 331 or 332.
W. M. O. Lochead Prize in Economics
Founded by W.M.O. Lochead, M.A. 1898, Kitchener, Ontario. The prize is awarded to the student with the highest standing in either ECON 231 or 232.
George and Mary Louise Patton Memorial Scholarship
Founded by the late George Patton in memory of his wife, Mary Louise Patton, and himself. Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Economics on the basis of the work in the second year to a student who records the intention to take an honours B.A. with a concentration in Economics or Applied Economics. To be eligible a student must be registered in at least 15.0 units of economics in his or her first three years.
Schraven Brothers Scholarship
Established in April 2008 by Tobias Schraven, B.A. (Hons.) 2000, M.A. 2001, and David Schraven, B.A. (Hons.) 2004. Awarded on the basis of academic performance in courses in econometrics, financial economics, and/or game theory to international students who are registered in, or graduating from a B.A. (Honours) program with a major in either Economics or Applied Economics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Department of Economics with final approval by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee.
M. C. Urquhart Book Prize in Economics 110
Established by former students and colleagues of M.C. Urquhart, a distinguished professor in the Department of Economics for more than three decades. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students who have completed 6.0 units of first year Economics courses.
The Don Wood Undergraduate Scholarships in Economics
Established in April 2006 by David Dodge, B.A.(Hons.) 1965, LL.D. 2002 and Christiane Dodge, B.A.H. 1965, in honour of the late Don Wood, M.A. 1953, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to one or more full-time students entering the second, third, or fourth year of a B.A. (Honours) program with a Major in Economics, a Major in Applied Economics, or a Medial in Economics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Department of Economics.
Part-time Economics Awards
Matheson Prize
Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association. This prize is in honour of the late Dean John Matheson who was at one time supervisor of extension work. He also was from 1939 until 1943 Director of the Summer School. Throughout his career he was an ardent believer in extension courses, friend and counsellor of many generations of students. Awarded to the undergraduate student achieving the highest standing in an economics course taken in the Spring Term, Summer Term or Spring-Summer Evening session.

Awards and Prizes Open to Economics
Rector Norman McLeod Rogers Prize
Established in memory of Norman Rogers (1894-1940), who held the Chair of Politics at Queens from 1929 to 1935. Combining academic distinction with a commitment to public life, Mr. Rogers was elected M.P. for Kingston in 1935 and served subsequently as Minister of Labour. At the time of his death he was Canada's Minister of National Defence. Among his many accomplishments and honours, Mr. Rogers was selected as a Rhodes Scholar for Nova Scotia and from 1938 was Rector of Queens. The prize is awarded to a graduating undergraduate or graduate student in the Departments of Political Studies, Economics, History, or the Public Administration program in the School of Policy Studies, who intends after completion of his or her studies to enter politics or the public service. A letter of application, with a current transcript and resume, should be submitted to the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards) by 1 February; no other material will be considered by the committee. Selection will be made by a committee chaired by the Head of Political Studies, and comprising the Heads of Economics and History and the Director of the School of Policy Studies, or their delegates. The three top-ranked candidates will be interviewed by the Committee.

Ethel M. Birkenshaw Award
Established by Ethel M. Birkenshaw, B.A. 1948, and awarded to students enrolled full-time in a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program concentrating in either Economics, English, History or Political Studies. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic ability, leadership qualities, evidence of an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in public service, volunteer activities or community service.
Nathan Richard Cowan Memorial Award
Established in October 2002 by family, friends, Smith Engineering at Queen's University and the Department of Economics in memory of a remarkable individual, Nathan Cowan (1977-2002), B.Sc., B.A. (Economics) 2002. Awarded on the basis of financial need to second, third, or fourth year students enrolled in Smith Engineering or the Department of Economics. Awarded normally in even-numbered years to students enrolled in Smith Engineering, and in odd-numbered years to students enrolled in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Candidates will be student athletes with preference given to a member of the Queen's University Sailing Team, who may demonstrate aspirations to participate at a higher level of competition. The award will be administered on compliance with all OUA and CIS regulations for athletic awards.
Department of Economics Bursary
Established in May 2001 from donations and awarded to a student in the Department of Economics on the basis of financial need.
Lee Award in Financial Economics
Established in April 2008 by Gordon Lee, B.A. (Hons.) 1991, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to a student enrolled in a B.A. (Honours) program with a major or medial in Economics who has achieved a grade of at least 82% in at least one 300 or 400 level course in financial economics (currently ECON 322 and ECON 423).
Professors For A Better Queen's Bursary
Established by Lorne Carmichael and Susan Hara and awarded on the basis of financial need to a full-time or part-time students registered in any degree program in Economics or Computing Science who have been admitted under the mature student regulation.
Douglas D. Purvis Award
Established in memory of Douglas Purvis, Head of the Department of Economics and Director of the John Deutsch Institute for the Study of Economic Policy, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student with high academic standing entering the third year of a B.A. program with a major, medial or minor concentration in Economics. If there are no eligible applicants in third year, students in the fourth year of an Economics program will be considered.
Stephen J. R. Smith Bursary
Established by Stephen J.R. Smith, B.Sc. (Eng) 1972, M.Sc. (Econ). Awarded to students enrolled in an Economics program in the Faculty of Arts and Science or an Electrical Engineering program in Smith Engineering at Queen's University on the basis of financial need, leadership, creativity and extra-curricular activities. Preference will be given to students who have not received other awards greater than $1,000.
Nancy M. Stiles Memorial Award
Established in October 2002 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Nancy M. Stiles, B.A. 1972. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to second-, third-, or fourth-year students in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a concentration in Economics or Political Studies. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate an interest in international relations.
