This seminar course will focus on topics related to inequality, competition, market power and regulation. Each student will be required to research and write a major paper, present it in class, and participate in general discussion of the presentations. During the first few weeks we will discuss recent theoretical and empirical research from the following areas: (1) Income/wealth inequality, (2) labor and product market competition, (3) market power and regulation, (4) worker and firm productivity, and potentially other related topics. We will also cover useful theoretical concepts, empirical tools, and computational methods. Students are expected to complete a paper related to one of these topics by the end of the semester, with ongoing guidance from the instructor.
