Phaseout of econ.queensu.ca Email Addresses

Questions to be answered

1. Is there a way for the department to get econ.queensu.ca emails hosted through 365, possibly at additional cost but using the same agreement Queen's has with Microsoft?

The number of accounts would be small and limited so I doubt the cost would be large.

Mark > ITS was contacted.  We can maintain @econ.queensu.ca through O365 without any costs

2. If answer to #1 is No, is there anything about the queensu.ca domain that prevents us from creating a separate agreement with Microsoft or Google for hosting econ.queensu.ca emails?

3.  If the answer to #2 is No, then we'll look at those options.

Looking at Political Studies, they have emails such as ugpols@queensu.ca and polshead@queensu.ca.  These must be aliases?? 

M > I'm not sure exactly how these addresses will be dealt with, if they they are aliases or actual account, but I will be able to assign them to the appropriate person and will have their own storage kept separate so, as an example, head@econ can be assigned to Sharon but if it is decided someone else needs to manage it I can assign it to another.

I can't find any mention on the IT page for creating aliases like this for departments.   

Mark, if you don't know already, please find out if we can get similar aliases or accounts and how they are maintained.  

Presuming we can get these aliases/accounts:  

I will draw up a list of admin addresses on this page with proposed accounts or aliases for existing econ.queensu.ca admin emails.  We will ensure people are "happy" with the names before creating the aliases

I'm assuming that, for example,  "econhead@queensu.ca" will be an alias for heada@queensu.ca not a separate account  

Ensure staff are getting their email from both econ.queensu.ca and their personal queensu.ca during the transition.  Their "from/reply" address can be changed to their own or their admin alias @queensu.ca.   

We then change all official econ.queens.ca versions on the website to the queens.ca address. 

The new queensu.ca aliases/accounts should all be place before an actual LEGACY email service is created.  

Once the legacy server is active we can create aliases (presumably at no cost) for the admin email addresses that point to the queensu.ca version. 

• For example: ugrad@econ.queensu.ca => econugrad@queensu.ca

After a period of say one year we can remove these aliases. 

At this point a small number of legacy econ.queensu.ca emails are being served somewhere.

The decision to end this service can be made whenever by whoever is in charge at the time
